part 2 : essay
title : The expression of life
How design communicate our life
Design is one way for the people to show about one emotion, one story, one expression and to show more. With design we can communication or show story behind the design or show how we make one beautiful design or what story we can give in design. In design we can show meaning the design we emotion in design and after people see that they can fell the emotion and story about that design.
Some designers have a hard time explaining that when creating a magazine layout, for example, they don’t take the photograph, paint the picture, write the article, or draw the typeface. What they do is organize elements on the page, a process that largely involves choosing, scaling, cropping, and otherwise adjusting readymade elements. Explaining the value of this process to outsiders can be tough. But guess what: it’s our job. Because design is communication.
The design process is a constant conversation about what we’re making, why we’re making it, and what the end result should be. We are continually explaining our intentions to clients, printers, fabricators, bosses, underlings, and collaborators. Failing to do so means the job doesn’t get done right.
The final design needs to communicate ideas and values to end users, but on the road to getting there, countless conversations are taking place about what needs to be done.
Communication design is one way to show us the meaning of design.Communication design is a mixed discipline between design and information-development which is concerned with how media intermission such as printed, crafted, electronic media or presentations communicate with people. A communication design approach is not only concerned with developing the message aside from the aesthetics in media, but also with creating new media channels to ensure the message reaches the target audience.
Communication design can also refer to a systems-based approach, in which the totality of media and messages within a culture or organization are designed as a single integrated process rather than a series of discrete efforts.
Communication design seeks to attract, inspire, create desires and motivate the people to respond to messages, with a view to making a favorable impact to the bottom line of the commissioning body, which can be either to build a brand, move sales, or for humanitarian purposes. Its process involves strategic business thinking, using market research, creativity, and problem-solving.
The term communication design is often used interchangeably with visual communication, but has an alternate broader meaning that includes auditory, vocal, touch and smell. Examples of Communication Design include information architecture, editing, typography, illustration, web design, animation, advertising, ambient media, visual identity design, performing arts, copywriting and professional writing skills applied in the creative industries.
With communication design we can show meaning the design in magazine, newspaper, and etc. In design we must know to about visual design. Visual design is one way to show all meaning about we design.

Visual Design is the design working in any media or support of visual communication. This is a correct terminology to cover all types of design applied in communication that uses visual channel for transmission of messages, precisely because this term relate to the concept of visual language of some media and not limited to support a particular form of content, as do the terms graphic design (graphics) or Interface design (electronic media).
We promote the application of designs and design processes to improve vital areas of people’s lives worldwide. To us, the best definition of design has been expressed by Professsor John Heskett, who tells us "Design is the human capacity to shape and make our environments in ways that satisfy our needs and give meaning to our lives."
Design offers environmental, social, and economically sustainable tools to make the world a safe and better environment for people. Design processes are the ways of working that identify solutions based on the knowledge, responsiveness, and methodology of designers.
For show emotion, story, and more in design we need a media toappreciate it. A medium is the extension of our human existence. It is a tool by which we engage in life. Any media designed with excellence spreads a certain message about our life and our humanity.
Now we know, design is one good way to show a message, emotion, story, and more. Some people can cry, happy after see a good design, it proves with the design we can communication about all story in the world and with design we can express our lives by design. I think, better you make one creation in design for send one message about your life or people life, because maybe if you make it, some Peoples in the world can give you goodappreciation and they can know to, with the design we can show or tell to world about our life, people life, or world life.

Week 7

Random Word / Image Association

Random Association is an idea generation method which allows students to systematically generate new ideas through a fixed formula. The whole premise of Random Association is to use a Random Word to provoke a reaction from the brain.

As what i understand, random word / image association is an image or a word to make us brain storming to think how to solve the problem.

Week 4

juxtaposition

in week 4 we are learning about juxtaposition, what is it?

juxtaposition is synonymous with contrast, two objects or texts that oppose one another.

Many creative processes rely on juxtaposition. By juxtaposing two objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically associate or transfer meaning. Usually ‘turning’ something familiar to something less familiar or vice-versa.In literature and film, juxtaposition is the arrangement of two opposing ideas, characters, objects, etc. side-by-side or in similar narratives for effect

for example :

· It's raining, but I am not taking an umbrella.

· We will be giving a party for our new students. We won't, however, be serving drinks.

· The student knew about the test on Friday, but still he did not study

Class activity

1 flower
2 lightning
3 ice
4 light
5 fire
6 duck
7 dog
8 oil
9 leaf
0 fly

0 head

9 rain

8 wood

7 tree

6 spider

5 root

4 mountain

3 wind

2 rock

1 water

first choose number between 00 - 99 and then combine the word
I choose 00, 66, 99
and I got fly head, duck spider, leaf rain

fly head : there was a big fly head in my dream last night
duck spider : the scientist has found a new species, duck spider
leaf rain : in the autumn I walk on a street and leaf rain fall from the sky

now time to draw it :D

Week 3

Mind map

What is mind map ?

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.

The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories.

By presenting ideas in a radial, graphical, non-linear manner, mind maps encourage a brainstorming approach to planning and organizational tasks. Though the branches of a mindmap represent hierarchical tree structures, their radial arrangement disrupts the prioritizing of concepts typically associated with hierarchies presented with more linear visual cues. This orientation towards brainstorming encourages users to enumerate and connect concepts without a tendency to begin within a particular conceptual framework.

The mind map can be contrasted with the similar idea of concept mapping. The former is based on radial hierarchies and tree structuresdenoting relationships with a central governing concept, whereas concept maps are based on connections between concepts in more diverse patterns.

Bill Gates

Who is Bill Gates ?

Bill Gates Pictures, Images and Photos

William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate, philanthropist, author and chairman of Microsoft, the software company he founded with Paul Allen. He is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest overall from 1995 to 2009, excluding 2008, when he was ranked third. During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest individual shareholder with more than 8 percent of the common stock. He has also authored or co-authored several books.

Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. Although he is admired by many, a number of industry insiders criticize his business tactics, which they consider anti-competitive, an opinion which has in some cases been upheld by the courts. In the later stages of his career, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000.

Bill Gates stepped down as chief executive officer of Microsoft in January 2000. He remained as chairman and created the position of chief software architect. In June 2006, Gates announced that he would be transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He gradually transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie, chief software architect and Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer. Gates' last full-time day at Microsoft was June 27, 2008. He remains at Microsoft as non-executive chairman.

Microsoft and Bill Gates

BASIC

During Microsoft's early years, all employees had broad responsibility for the company's business. Gates oversaw the business details, but continued to write code as well. In the first five years, he personally reviewed every line of code the company shipped, and often rewrote parts of it as he saw fit.Microsoft's BASIC was popular with computer hobbyists, but Gates discovered that a pre-market copy had leaked into the community and was being widely copied and distributed. In February 1976, Gates wrote an Open Letter to Hobbyists in the MITS newsletter saying that MITS could not continue to produce, distribute, and maintain high-quality software without payment. This letter was unpopular with many computer hobbyists, but Gates persisted in his belief that software developers should be able to demand payment. Microsoft became independent of MITS in late 1976, and it continued to develop programming language software for various systems. The company moved from Albuquerque to its new home in Bellevue, Washington on January 1, 1979.

IBM partnership In 1980, IBM approached Microsoft to write the BASIC interpreter for its upcoming personal computer, the IBM PC. When IBM's representatives mentioned that they needed an operating system, Gates referred them to Digital Research (DRI), makers of the widely used CP/M operating system. IBM's discussions with Digital Research went poorly, and they did not reach a licensing agreement. IBM representative Jack Sams mentioned the licensing difficulties during a subsequent meeting with Gates and told him to get an acceptable operating system. A few weeks later Gates proposed using 86-DOS(QDOS), an operating system similar to CP/M that Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products (SCP) had made for hardware similar to the PC. Microsoft made a deal with SCP to become the exclusive licensing agent, and later the full owner, of 86-DOS. After adapting the operating system for the PC, Microsoft delivered it to IBM as PC-DOS in exchange for a one-time fee of $50,000. Gates did not offer to transfer the copyright on the operating system, because he believed that other hardware vendors would clone IBM's system. They did, and the sales of MS-DOS made Microsoft a major player in the industry.

Gates oversaw Microsoft's company restructuring on June 25, 1981, which re-incorporated the company in Washington state and made Gates President of Microsoft and the Chairman of the Board.

Windows

Microsoft launched its first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985, and in August, the company struck a deal with IBM to develop a separate operating system calledOS/2. Although the two companies successfully developed the first version of the new system, mounting creative differences undermined the partnership. Gates distributed an internal memo on May 16, 1991, announcing that the OS/2 partnership was over and Microsoft would shift its efforts to the Windows NT kernel development.

Week 2

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention.

Novelty

(derived from Latin word novus for "new") is the quality of being new. Although it may be said to have an objective dimension (e.g. a new style of artcoming into being, such as abstract art or impressionism) it essentially exists in the subjective perceptions of individuals.

It also refers to something novel; that which is striking, original or unusual. The term can have pejorative sense and refer to a mere innovation.

Creativity

refers to the phenomenon whereby something new is created which has some kind of value. What counts as "new" may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within which the novelty occurs. What counts as "valuable" is similarly defined in a variety of ways.

Scholarly interest in creativity ranges widely: the mental and neurological processes associated with creative activity; the relationship between personality type and creative ability; the relationship between creativity and intelligence, learning and mental health; and ways of fostering creativity through training and technology.

Creativity and creative acts are therefore studied across several discplines - psychology, cognitive science, education, philosophy (particularly philosophy of science), theology, sociology, linguistics, business studies and economics. As a result there is a multitude of definitions and approaches.

Innovation

comes from the Latin innovātus which means to renew. Innovation can therefore be seen as the process that renews something that exists and not, as is commonly assumed, the introduction of something new

Invention

is a new composition, device, or process. An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea, or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough. In addition, there is cultural invention, which is an innovative set of useful social behaviors adopted by people and passed on to others.[1] Inventions often extend the boundaries of human knowledge or experience. An invention that is novel and not obvious to others skilled in the same field may be able to obtain the legal protection of a patent.

these for elements are the basic things that we have to grab for become a great designer. Every person could be a designer, but not every person could be a great designer that different from the others and has they own way to design that makes them unique. I keep learning to become that way :)
